Annual Philippine Sustainability Movement Event

Climate change is a game changer – the CEO of the BINCA Group, Oliver Fritsch, spoke about this and how to make the supply chain greener in Manila.

The Annual Philippine Sustainability Movement Event took place for the 9th time in October at the Marriott Manila. The event was launched by Seatrace International CEO Christian Schmidradner. What began as an event to make the seafood supply chain of the Philippine hotel industry more sustainable is now an important international meeting, a sustainability movement for producers, the food industry, NGOs and government representatives. Oliver Fritsch, CEO of the binca group, was invited as a speaker.

Sustainability is a major challenge for everyone. In fisheries, great progress has been made in recent decades: the MSC and ASC labels for sustainable fish from wild-caught and responsibly farmed sources have become established in the trade and among consumers, and the greenhouse gas emissions of the EU fishing fleet were reduced by 52 per cent between 1990 and 2021, to name just a few examples. Nevertheless, many challenges remain. More than a third of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide are caused by the food industry, a third of which are in the supply chain. Another third of all food worldwide is lost due to losses and waste, which alone accounts for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change is a game changer that fundamentally alters the concept of sustainability. Strong networks of all stakeholders are needed to make the supply chain greener and to make a difference. Oliver Fritsch talked about how collaboration along the entire value chain from producer to consumer can be made more sustainable – results that were developed in collaboration with a food retail company as part of a lean management project.
